Smoothies and Skincare

Ok – I’m not about to write some spiel about how ‘a smoothie a day keeps the wrinkles away’– but… kinda. I, more than anyone, know how stressful inflamed and agitated skin can be. After the birth of my girls, I suffered with terrible adult acne and quickly my mental health began to suffer.

As a skin practitioner, I felt I should have flawless, even skin 24/7. The reality is that life isn’t like that. Being a busy mum of 3 young children I needed quick, easy and attainable results. I didn’t have time for treatments every 2 weeks, lying under lamps, slathering on every lotion and potion. So I turned to my diet. So much of what we eat has a direct effect in what you see on your skin.

Let’s talk about how ‘eating your skincare’ can become your most delicious beauty ritual yet. Starting off with some key players!

  • Carrots are more than just a lunchbox classic, they’re little orange glow sticks. Rich in beta-carotene, they give your body a gentle, natural source of vitamin A, which your skin uses for cell turnover, collagen production, and overall radiance.

In the skincare world, we know retinol is a holy grail ingredient, but did you know beta-carotene is basically nature’s version? It helps support smoother, brighter skin from the inside, minus the irritation.

Other beta-carotene powerhouses: sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash. Basically, if it’s orange, your skin loves it.

  • Sure, drinking water is essential but the foods you eat can seriously up your hydration game, too. And hydrated skin isn’t just about feeling soft, it’s about function. Your skin barrier thrives when it’s properly moisturised, which means less sensitivity, less flakiness, and a better defence against the elements.

    Top hydrating MVPs:

    • Cucumber (so much water, so much skin-soothing silica)

    • Watermelon (hydrating and antioxidant-rich)

    • Courgette (subtle, versatile, and great in smoothies)

    • Celery (not just a garnish anymore, it’s an electrolyte hero)

  • Inflammation can be a sneaky culprit behind breakouts, dullness, and redness. So when you load up on anti-inflammatory foods, you’re not just helping your overall health you’re literally calming your complexion.

    Some skin-soothing staples:

Berries: Packed with antioxidants that help fight free radicals.

Fatty fish: Omega-3s help strengthen the skin barrier and reduce inflammation.

Leafy greens: Full of vitamins that help brighten and protect.

Avocados: Healthy fats and vitamin E = happy, glowing skin.

Turmeric: A golden anti-inflammatory superstar (pro tip: add a pinch to your smoothie for an extra skin-loving kick).

  • Here’s where the fun really starts. Smoothies are one of the easiest (and tastiest) ways to cram a bunch of skin-loving ingredients into one glass. They hydrate, nourish, calm inflammation, and support everything from collagen production to skin repair.

Final Thoughts… no, a smoothie won’t replace sunscreen, it won’t get rid of acne overnight or magically erase every fine line but when you consistently fuel your body with skin-loving nutrients, it shows. Your skin barrier stays stronger, your complexion looks more radiant, and everything just works better.

So yes, skincare is what you put on your skin, but it’s also 100% what you put in your body. And if you can toss it all in a blender and call it breakfast? Even better.

Bottom line? Eat your skincare. Your face will thank you.
